But here's the twist that makes this interesting: no major AI platform has officially confirmed they actually read these files. Google's Gary Illyes stated in July 2025 that Google doesn't support llms.txt and isn't planning to.
So why are thousands of companies still adopting it?

The pattern is clear: the companies moving fastest aren't just adding a text file to their root directory. They're rearchitecting how their digital presence communicates with machines.
What AI Agents Actually Need From Your Website
Forget the flashy homepage redesign. Here's what actually matters when an AI agent visits your site:
Structured data. A study by Data World found that GPT-4's accuracy jumped from 16% to 54% when content uses proper Schema.org markup. Your beautiful visual layout means nothing to an agent. Structured data -- JSON-LD for your products, services, FAQs, reviews -- is what lets AI understand and accurately represent your business.
API access. The most AI-ready businesses expose their core functions through well-documented APIs. An AI agent booking a meeting shouldn't need to click through five pages of your scheduling widget. It should hit an endpoint.
Clear, machine-readable content. If your pricing is buried in a PDF, your product specs live inside interactive JavaScript widgets, and your contact information is an image -- you're invisible to AI agents.
An llms.txt file. Yes, despite the uncertain adoption by AI platforms, it's still worth having. It's low-effort (a single markdown file), it signals forward-thinking to potential customers, and when AI platforms do formally adopt it, you'll be ready.
The Competitive Advantage You're Not Thinking About
Here's where this gets real for business owners.
Imagine your competitor's AI sales assistant can pull accurate, real-time pricing from a supplier's website because that supplier structured their data properly. Meanwhile, your AI assistant gets a garbled mess because the same supplier's pricing page relies entirely on client-side JavaScript rendering.

- Add an llms.txt file. Spend 30 minutes writing a markdown summary of your business, key pages, and important resources. Drop it in your root directory.
- Implement Schema.org markup. Start with the basics: Organization, Product, FAQ, and Article schemas. Most CMS platforms have plugins that make this straightforward.
- Audit your content for machine readability. Can an AI agent access your pricing without rendering JavaScript? Are your product descriptions in parseable HTML or locked in images and PDFs?
- Document your APIs. If you have them, make them discoverable. If you don't, consider which core business functions would benefit from programmatic access.
- Think about MCP. Anthropic's Model Context Protocol is becoming the standard for AI-to-business tool integration. It's early, but understanding it now puts you ahead.
The Web Is Being Rewritten -- Quietly
The shift from human-only web design to AI-inclusive web architecture won't happen with a bang. There's no single announcement or standard that will force the change. It's happening gradually -- one llms.txt file, one structured data implementation, one API endpoint at a time.
But make no mistake: the businesses that prepare for AI agent visitors today will have a structural advantage over those that wait. Not because the technology demands it right now, but because the trajectory is unmistakable.
